My Alternative to a $725 Lamp

Something I've been keeping my eyes open for for a while has been a large table lamp. The only prerequisite was that it had to be white and interesting...and affordable. I was picturing this one or this one from Jonathan Adler - but at $725 and $395 respectively I knew I wouldn't be buying any of them. So I kept 'affordable white large interesting' table lamp on my mental  'to buy' list.

Well, as luck would have it last week I darted into my local second-hand store (Yes, darted. For some reason when I go into a second-hand store I tend to dart) and look what I found...

I'm not sure how well you can notice in the pics but it has a a simple pattern in it - making it interesting. And it's big. And off-white. Oh, and at $4.99 it definitely qualifies as affordable. I've spent more on a large cup of coffee from Starbucks. And I don't even really like Starbucks. Total score.

Now my only debate is what colour shade to buy for it: off-white, gray, black or something different all together. What do you think?

(By the way - the winner of the my back-to-blogging giveaway for a FREE template from Rainy Day Templates will be announced this week!)

4.99 is like the best deal ever! It doesnt get better than that. I say go with a pattern for the shade, maybe more pink? Or plain white and add some ribbon trim...I dont know there are so many choices :) Great find!

Awesome deal! I love the thought of a grey shade on it.

First, excellent find! I never seem to find anything good at thrift/secondhand stores.

Second, I would say definitely not off-white. The thing that drives me nuts with white shades on white lamps is they end up looking all yellowy because of the bulb when they're actually on. Grey would be lovely (I'm planning on grey shades for a couple white lamps of my own).

Darting happens, I think, because you panic that, now that you're IN the store, someone might snatch something away from you. It's survival.

I'd love to see a mustard yellow shade.

Great deal! I think a nice soft grey would look nice. Or maybe a black & White pattern.

I think a wild printed shade would rock that lamp.

I love it! I need to start going to second hand stores on a more regular basis. You always find the best stuff. Can you come to OH and shop with me?

The lamp is a great find. I love its bold bulbous shape and the detail of the inner lines cant be beat. As far as what type of shade to go with it I think you should go for something just as bold as the lamp itself. Bold but clean. I can't stand anything too fussy. Cant wait to see what you do with it.
