QOTD: Any City In The World...

Question, and I promise I'll expand on my thinking later, if you were 30ish, single, and given a plane ticket plus to relocate to any city (in the world) for a minimum of 2 years where would you go? And why? Would you stay close to "home" or in your country - or would you head overseas? And yes, you would have to find a job (or so something to generate income) at some point.

Do tell......

Relocate permanently or just for a short period of time? Do I have to find a job?

$5K is barely going to cover a ticket, security deposit and one months rent in most big cities. But assuming the money isn't meant to be a limiting factor, I'd probably go with London (or maybe Paris or Madrid) b/c I'd love to have more time to explore it.

Make it $50k and I'll get back to you. ;)

(In all honesty, though, I'd pick NYC. Fortunately, I'm already there!)

@Mrs Limestone-
Good questions. I’ve expanded the original post to answer them. Those cities are great – expensive but would probably be great to live in for a while.

@Anna-
Yes...NYC....

FYI the $5000 was meant to be a flexible guideline - so that you guys reading this question wouldn't think you'd be moving flat broke. But I've removed the dollar amount so no one feels restricted by that number :)

Probably Toronto Canada. It's close to home (US) and I love the city since it's kind of like Chicago.

Auckland, NZ. It's a place I've always wanted to see and I think that it would be an amazing country to get to know.

I'm thinking Dublin right now. They speak English, which makes my life easier, and I think Ireland is beautiful. Plus with Ryan Air and proximity to the continent, weekend travel possibilities are endless! The weather might get to me, but if it's only for 2 years, I think I could do it. This is actually a really interesting question to me, since I'm hoping to soon be applying to grad schools, and I'm currently mulling over the list of schools with my program, and thinking about what places I could stand to live in for 2 years. I keep wanting to stay in the Northeast because of skiing and proximity to family, but maybe I could do two years in the South or Midwest, who knows?

I've been thinking I want to move to Austin, not sure if there are enough jobs there that pay over $12 an hour though...

I'd still pick NYC, even with the revisions! I'm not very adventurous, and I'm kind of lazy.

Honestly, I really can't imagine living anywhere but within a 100-mile radius of NYC. I don't really even like to travel.

I realize that's sad and un-fun and so limiting, but it's the truth.

@Sing - Toronto - my home! It is a great city if I do say so myself :)

@Kara - Auckland! Wow - that would be amazing.

@Sweet Nothings - I've never been to London but, on the whole, I hear pretty good things.

@Michelle - Dublin would be interesting. I've always wanted to visit Ireland....and I agree, with Ryan Air it would be so easy to travel around Europe - long weekends would be spent traveling for sure! It'll be interesting to see what you decide :)

@Gia - I don't know much about Austin - is the job market tough there now? Well, it is in most places so.....

@Anna - Yes - I think NYC would be top 3 for most people :) I've always wanted to live in Harlem....and your location seems perfect -easy to get to NYC but then easy to get away to a nice house with a yard! hmmmm i could do that.....

Cape Town! Totally unexpected, but it is one of the most cosmopolitain cities in such a lovely geography. I visited there once 5 years ago and it was not enough.

I would go to Paris, I love the culture and the fashion and would take some design courses in Haute Couture.

NYC would have been my 1st choice, but since my daughter now lives there and I visit every chance I get...and I speak only English (shame!) I would pick London. If language were not a barrier it would have been Paris. (I have French ancestors.)
