Not All My DIYs Work Out...

...at least not on the first try. But this is one I'll definitely be attempting again. Least you all think that all of my DIY projects turn out half-decent or blog-worthy on the first shot I decided I'd share one I just worked on (as in last night & this morning) that didn't quite go so well (but has loads of potential I think!).

Ions (or is it Eons?) ago, I spotted a black & white chevron tray that I thought was fab! I'm pretty sure it was Oscar de la Renta which means it was totally out of my budget but I've kept it tucked away in my memory since I really adored it.

Found a picture! Chevron print tray by Oscar de la Renta

Anywho, whenever I'm at the Dollar Store I notice these thin un-finished wood trays that they sell for $1.25 and I finally decided yesterday to try and recreate the chevron print on it.

I started with the unfinished tray:

And painted it white:

Not bad at all...

When I couldn't remember where I'd put my painters tape I knew this would end up being a trial run but still had high hopes for it. So I used masking tape and attempted to tape out a chevron print. This is MUCH harder than it looks. Note to self - find a chevron stencil for the next attempt!

Then I painted it black:

And after about 10 minutes (I was totally impatient) I removed the tape and voila:

Now, in the above photo it might not look too bad & in-person from a few feet away it's not. But get in close and you notice where the black paint seeped under the tape in some spots:

YIKES!

Yup. I just posted that horrible DIY pic. Proof that I'm not the Queen DIYer - but that doesn't stop me from trying! (and it shouldn't stop you!) All-in-all, despite that pic, it's not too bad. I may just touch it up with some white paint but the perfectionist in me knows I'll just do it again. It was easy and quick...and cheap. $1.25 people! And for those of you wondering where you might use it - because the wood is not that strong I wouldn't use it for heavy stuff - but you can use it anywhere where you need to keep small things together. Like on a console near the entryway for keys, iPods and glasses. Or on top of the toilet with a nice candle and bathroom stuff, or on your coffee table for remotes, on your desk with a nice glass holding pencils/pens and other office-y stuff...tons of possibilities!

Totally worth a try! The Oscar de la Renta tray is gorgeous!

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. It's always nice to meet people in blogland.

My trick: use paint pens from craft stores to touch up painted lines. It's easier to use a black paint pen, because white is sometimes TOO white and it shows.

I still like it, it looks almost vintage, it's unique, love the idea either way :)

Try frogtape. I hate paint bleed and that tape really works.

Great idea! It looks fine, but I would have to redo it too, if it wasn't perfect. That's why I don't DIY too often ;)

clearly noted...but you are the queen of taping so you need no advice.

Hmm...what about painting the tray black and lining the bottom with wallpaper? I am sure you could find some very similar patterns that you like...Love your blog!

Another trick, if you don't like the wallpaper idea, is to paint over the edges of the tape with the base colour and let it dry. Then paint over that with the black. The white paint will bleed (if it is going to bleed) and it won't be noticeable, but it will also create a seal so the black can't bleed under the tape.

I remember coming across a trick to prevent that sort of bleeding paint but of course I don't remember it now. doh! Maybe it was what Alanna said.

thanks everyone, for not being utterly disgusted at my first attempt lol!

@Anon 8:09 - i'd never heard of a paint pen, i'll have to look for it the next time i'm at the craft store. thanks!

@Lavender and Lilies - thanks for the suggestion. is frog tape anything like blue painters tape?

@Alanna - what a fab idea! wallpaper...or perhaps even gift wrap paper. that's what i l love about blogging - getting feedback from everyone! & thanks for that idea on how to seal! i must try that...

I saw a tip for painting walls... 1)tape 2)go over the edges of the tape with the color of paint that is underneath the tape (in this case white) 3) after it dries, paint with the final color (black)

Oh, looks like Alanna already suggested that. I guess that's why you read the other comments before you start writing.

It's not that bad. :)

I remember seeing a chevron stencil somewhere.

It looks good and definitely screams Apratment 412. Why to have similar to what you see!?! it's always good to give your own touch and it has that tocuh of yours.

Do you know a fact? IF you would have said that I gave it this look instead of that neat look... many of us would have tried to give theirs tray the look of Apartment 412 (what you call is untidy or not that clean). I hope you understand what i mean. <3
